From the time of the First Australians, the Brisbane River, known as Maiwar, has been a meeting place, a highway, and a source of food for the Turrbal and Jagarra people. The Moreton Bay islands have also continually shaped south-east Queensland’s history, from Bribie Island in the north to North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah) in the south, which is home to the Quandamooka people. The winding river and bay of islands have inspired generations of artists, including Issac Walter Jenner, Sonja Carmichael and Ian Fairweather.
