Australians’ connection with the land is strong. The land has helped determine the character of Australian society and, in turn, society’s economic, political and cultural characteristics have helped shape the Australian worker. Our interaction with the land, however, is often contested, and artists such as Robert Klippel and Daphne Mayo have played a vital role in navigating a national self-image based on these relationships.
