Miloš Tomić is fascinated by our daily experiences and the collective sounds we create in our everyday interactions, such as flicking a light switch on and off. Musical diary #1 2012 features Tomić and his young son (along with other children) creating various repeated sounds using both instruments and everyday household items.
The improvised sounds have been layered to create an exuberant musical cacophony. The video also captures the unscripted interactions between Tomić and his son, who obviously delights in this playful experimentation and anarchic break from their normal routine, discovering together the world of sound and music that we make in our daily lives.
Miloš Tomić is a multimedia artist who works across film, photography, sculpture and collage. Tomić first studied directing and then animation — experiences that continue to influence his practice.
1. Watch and listen to a sample of the artwork. Did you recognise any of the sounds or objects in the video?
2. What is the artist trying to tell us about music, sound and identity?
Keep a sound diary for one day. Write down all the sounds that you hear throughout the course of your day. For example, pouring cereal into a bowl, the school bell, bouncing a ball at lunch, doors opening and closing, etc. Do you think any of the sounds are unique to you?
