David Rose’s initial training in forestry is perhaps evident in his images, which deal with subjects in nature; such as the 1976 etching Marigolds. With this image, Rose focuses predominantly on capturing the image of marigolds, using a basic colour scheme consisting of black and a warm yellow. The combination of the free flowing form of the flowers, which appear to float upon the already randomly textured plate, creates a sense of marigolds in an open field.
Melbourne-born artist David Rose began painting, printmaking and screen printing in the early 1960s after graduating from the National Forestry School in Canberra.
In 1964 Rose travelled to Europe, where he studied etching at the Escuela de la Lonja in Barcelona. During this period in Spain, he also produced a series of lithographs at a local commercial workshop. After returning to Sydney in 1965, he taught printmaking for a decade before moving to Oulimbah on the New South Wales Central Coast where he pursued his art practice full time.
