Natalya Hughes is a painter and academic. Her work draws on a comprehensive knowledge of art history as well as textiles and pattern making. Her tutorials explore the body through silhouettes and symbolism through pattern making.
Art as Lens: Natalya Hughes views herself as an appropriation artist, drawing inspiration from artists, designers and craft makers from a wide range of times and cultures.
Art as Code: Hughes’s paintings, textiles and installations are loaded with codes that are often hidden within patterns and decoration.
Art as Knowledge: Natalya Hughes lectures in art history. Her knowledge of art periods, particularly modernism, is a major driver behind her practice as a contemporary female artist.
Art as Alternate: Hughes is highly critical of depictions of the female form that are generated through the male gaze. Her work addresses gaps in the representation of women through a process that analyses and reconstructs these artworks.
